Objects from our 21st Century Ancestors

April 14, 2023 - September 3, 2023, Rotterdam: M21D examined objects from a future perspective, highlighting social and environmental considerations. In this edition, the exhibition was made in collaboration with Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.

 

(English) Objects from our 21st century ancestors projects how a design collection will be presented and understood in the year 2108. While the future is unknowable, we can predict upheaval and change. New relationships between humans, ecologies, and animals will emerge. The presentation is developed by the Museum of 21st Century Design and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen as part of the exhibition Looking Ahead: Objects of Change at Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen (conceived by Annemartine van Kesteren). Visitors will journey into the future, where the world observes different values and standards for design after decades of extreme heat and flooding. The coastlines and national borders have shifted, and humans live in balance with the environment and other species; equality serves as the basis of survival.

 

Objects in the presentation sometimes mark innovations that transitioned us to a better future, while others signal flaws of past industrial systems and product life-cycles. Yet, to the curators of the future, much remains a mystery. This future perspective is both an experiment and invitation to imagine how design can help materialize the future we want to see. Public programming including hands-on activities and future-perspective tours of Rotterdam will be announced on an ongoing basis.

(Dutch) Objecten van onze voorouders uit de 21e eeuw projecteert hoe een designcollectie zal worden gepresenteerd en begrepen in het jaar 2108. Hoewel de toekomst niet te voorspellen is, kunnen we wel veranderingen voorspellen. Er zullen nieuwe relaties ontstaan tussen mensen, ecologieën en dieren. De tentoonstelling is ontwikkeld door Museum of 21st Century Design (M21D) en Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen als onderdeel van de tentoonstelling Vooruitkijken: Objects of Change in Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen. Bezoekers maken een reis naar de toekomst, waar de wereld andere waarden en normen voor design hanteert na decennia van extreme hitte en overstromingen. De kustlijnen en landsgrenzen zijn verschoven en de mens leeft in balans met andere soorten en het milieu; gelijkheid is de basis van overleven. 

 

Objecten in de tentoonstelling tonen soms innovaties die ons naar een betere toekomst hebben geleid, terwijl andere wijzen op gebreken van vroegere industriële systemen en de levenscyclus van producten. Toch blijft veel voor de curatoren van de toekomst een mysterie. Dit toekomstperspectief is zowel een experiment als een uitnodiging om ons voor te stellen hoe design kan helpen om de toekomst die we willen zien, te materialiseren. De publieke programmering, waaronder hands-on activiteiten en rondleidingen door Rotterdam in toekomstperspectief, zal worden aangekondigd. 

 

De tentoonstelling en programmering worden mede mogelijk gemaakt door steun van Creative Industries Fund NL, VriendenLoterij Fonds, Het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds en Fonds 21.

 

The team

"Objects from our 21st-century ancestors" was realized by the M21D team. Georgina McDowall, former Head of Operations at M21D, is credited with creative direction, authoring 4 successful grant applications to make the project possible, and overall project management. Writing and research was led by Dr. Kiersten Thamm, Collections Curator. Emma van der Leest, Curator, on led programming, exhibition design, and installation. Images, videos, and social posts came from Ling Lin.
